4.1 General site character

Other Site Characteristics

Forest area with representative flooded forests of pedunculate oak, black alder and ash, situated in the east part of Croatia, at the border line with Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The forest is combined by areas of different age which are being managed on a regular basis, except for two forest reserves. The area has several rivers (Virovi, Spačva, Studva etc.) with water and wetlands vegetation. Breeding birds of the area are Haliaeetus albicilla and Ciconia nigra. The pastures are very poor so the number of nesting pairs of birds that feed on these areas is very limited. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are pleistocene marsh loess and holocene marsh deposits (clay and clayey silt). Spačva covers the part of the Sava river holocene alluvial Bosut lowlands, which gradually rises to the south of the river and in the north to the Vukovar Plain. Dominant soils are hydromorphic soil: mollic gleysols-substratum is loamy to clayey alluvial deposits; eutric, mollic, calcaric gleysols-clay soil.

4.2 Quality and importance

- important site for Emys orbicularis - area is important for amphibian species Bombina bombina and Triturus dobrogicus - the area is considered to support a significant presence of Lutra lutra - conserved big oak forest complex of Spačva, together with forests of Odransko and Lonjsko polje, represent most important habitat for saproxylic beetle species Cerambyx cerdo and Lucanus cervus in continental biogeographical region in Croatia - important feeding and roosting site for Barbastella barbastellus
