Other Site Characteristics

The site is located in the Mediterranean part of Croatia, between towns of Skradin and Šibenik. It includes Prokljansko lake and the lower flow of river Krka to its mouth in the Adriatic sea. There are areas of dry Mediterranean grasslands and part of the site is under succession. It is a typical karst type estuary with special oceanographic characteristics - water column stratification, subsurface temperature maximum, long periods of salt water retention in the estuary. In the site two areas protected in the category of Significant landscape are situated.

4.2 Quality and importance

- the most representative site for Estuaries and estuarine communities in Croatia; it is a typical karst type estuary with special oceanographic characteristics - water column stratification, subsurface temperature maximum, long periods of salt water retention in the estuary; on this site marine organisms are found 40 meters upstream from the open sea - Tradanj cave represents important habitat for bats - important Miniopterus schreibersii, Myotis blythii, Myotis capaccinii, Myotis emarginatus, Rhinolophus euryale and Rhinolophus ferrumequinum nurseries - internationally important underground site for Rhinolophus euryale, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Myotis blythii, Myotis capaccinii and Myotis emarginatus
