Other Site Characteristics

Site Gorski kotar i sjeverna Lika is situated in the north-western part of Croatia, along the border with Slovenia. The site mostly covers the mountainous and forested region of Gorski kotar and the northern part of Lika region. Dominant habitat is mixed forests. This mountainous area belongs to the Dinaric mountain range which stretches from the eastern Alps to the Šara – Pindus Mountains. The highway Zagreb – Rijeka, which connects the inland with the coast, crosses the area as well as a major railroad. One green bridge was built across the highway and due to other objects like tunnels and viaducts, permeability of the highway for wildlife is quite high. Some parts of this site are already protected in certain national categories - Strict reserve Bijele i Samaraske stijene, Special reserves Vražji prolaz-Zeleni vir and Debela lipa-Velika Rebar, Park forests Japlenški vrh and Golubinjak. In the northern part of this site, National Park Risnjak is situated. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are rudist limestones (cenomanian-maastricht - K21-6), limestone and dolomite (lower cretaceous - K1), limestones and dolomites (upper jurassic - J3), limestone and dolomite (lower jurassic-J1), dolomite (upper noricum, ret - T22-3), predominantly clastic sediments (carbon, perm - C, P) and flisch sediments (middle and upper eocene - E2, 3). Soils: brown soil on limestone, rendzina soils on dolomite and limestone and Limestone and dolomite black soil. Gorski Kotar is a karst plain, about 35 km wide, and average high 800 m; mountain groups are extended in the Dinaric direction, and they are separated by karst valleys and fields. North Lika has a complex structure morphogenetic types of relief and complex orographic structure as a result of dynamic geotectonic relations, hydrogeological conditions, climate and anthropogenic influences.

4.2 Quality and importance

- important feeding and roosting site for Barbastella barbastellus and Rhinolophus hipposideros - this site is considered to be one of the best areas in Croatia for all large carnivores (Canis lupus, Ursus arctos and Lynx lynx) - because of the large population of Cordulegaster heros, the site is of importance for the conservation of this species in the Continental Biogeographical Region - the population of Coenagrion ornatum on the site is the largest in the country, so the site is of great importance for the conservation of Coenagrion ornatum in Croatia - important site for Genista holopetala - important site for 9530; As Ostryo-Pinetum nigrae - streams of Gorski kotar and northern Lika site are important habitats for Austropotamobius torrentium -
