Vasta area montana in ottimo stato di conservazione.

4.2 Quality and importance

Numerosi ambienti della Direttiva Habitat. Interesse botanico legato alla presenza di torbiere e pascoli a Nardus e di un lepidottero endemico di interesse comunitario. Importante sito riproduttivo per numerose specie ornitiche alpine (censite 11 specie degli elenchi in Allegato I Direttiva 79/409/CEE). Presenza regolare del lupo e saltuaria della lince.

5.3 Site designation (optional)

L'area rientra in parte (Alta Valle Antrona) nell'IBA IT002 "Valle Anzasca , Valle Antrona e valli circostanti" (Lambertini et al., 1990), successivamente rinominata IT003 "Valli di Anzasca e Antrona" (Casale et al., 2002), e in toto nell'IBA IT207 "Val Dossola" (Brunner et al., 2002), ultima revisione delle IBA italiane. Il sito ricade in toto nelle AIN (Aree di importanza naturalistica) denominate "Alta Val Bognanco", "Alta Valle Antrona" e "Valle del Dagliano" designate dalla Provincia VCO (Provincia VCO e Università di Pavia, 2003) e riconosciute anche a livello di piano territoriale provinciale (in preparazione). Comprende le oasi di protezione della fauna "Domodossola", "Bognanco 1", "Bognanco 2", "Antrona" (Meriggi et al., 1999), i biotopi provinciali "Torbiera di Ragozza" e "Laghi di Paione" (Provincia VCO, 2000) il geotopo provinciale "Frea di Antronapiana". Il 53% della superficie ricade nel Galassino "Valle Antrona".
