Other Site Characteristics

Il Sito è caratterizzato da una grande complessità morfologica. Presenta sui versanti sud alte scarpate calcaree o dolomiche che precipitano per diverse centinaia di metri, spesso prive di vegetazione arborea ed arbustiva. Di norma i versanti nord hanno invece pendenze minori e sono coperti da boschi di latifoglie, con presenza di formazioni di conifere, e ampie superfici a prateria secondaria o a pascolo. La particolare disposizione degli strati carbonatici, i sistemi orografici e la presenza di ampie pareti e zone fortemente erose conferisce al Sito un elevato valore paesaggistico. Il complesso montuoso su cui insiste il Sito, essendo collocato ai margini della catena alpina, è inoltre osservabile da notevoli distanze (50 100 Km). Anche gli aspetti geologici hanno una grande importanza, presentando formazioni rocciose, caratteristiche e fenomeni peculiari, studiati a livello internazionale.

4.2 Quality and importance

Il sito risulta significativo, da un punto di vista naturalistico, soprattutto per le specie botaniche, (le stazioni risultano ricche di endemismi alpini meridionali e sudorientali, che qui si trovano molto vicino all'estremo occidentale del loro areale, in stazioni relitte) insediati in habitat di interesse comunitario, quali praterie aride seminaturali del tipo Festuco-Brometea ricchi di Orchidee, pavimenti calcarei e faggete di Cephalanthero-Fagion. Le specie elencate al punto 3.3 sotto D, sono prevalentemente essenze elencate nella lista delle specie protette a livello regionale, tranne Atropa belladonna, Laserpitium nitidum e Ranunculus thora inseriti nella lista rossa regionale.
