Other Site Characteristics

Si tratta di un biotopo ad alta biodiversità. Le precipitazioni scarse, il sole, il vento, il freddo, le alte temperature, il pascolo da parte degli ovini e l'utilizzo da parte dell'uomo hanno conferito a questo paesaggio un carattere inconfondibile. La Val Venosta rappresenta la più arida "isola calda" delle Alpi Orientali. Il carattere steppico viene accentuato dalle caratteristiche microclimatiche e pedologiche. Il substrato geologico è costituito da filladi, gneis e micascisti.

4.2 Quality and importance

Ambiente estremamente secco, con numerose specie xerofile. Per la sua peculiarietà e specificità, con specie animali e vegetali di origine pontica e mediterranea, risulta un ambiente unico di importanza generale per l'intero arco alpino. L'unicità di tali ambienti a forte connotazione steppica deriva dalla posizione geografica ma anche dalla persistenza di forme d'utilizzo tradizionale, che ha favorito la conservazione di queste eccezionali isole climatiche, certamente le più aride del versante italiano delle Alpi.
