Other Site Characteristics

Si tratta del massiccio più immenso delle Alpi orientali, formato da roccia calcarea e ghiacciai. La formazione geologica principale e costituita da calcari triassici. Nell area si rinvengono numerosi mineraki anche piuttosto rari.

4.2 Quality and importance

Il gruppo dell'Ortles presenta estesi ecosistemi del piano alto-alpino-nivale. Contrariamente alle rimanenti catene montuose circostanti, dove predominano rocce silicee, l'Ortles è formato da roccia calcarea. Ciò fa si che la flora dell'Ortles sia abbastanza isolata. Qui si rinvengono specie calcaree orientali ed occidentali, tra cui anche alcune rarissime come Saxifraga hostii, Saxifraga aphylla e Draba fladnizensis. La vegetazione è molto varia ed include fra l altro foreste subalpine di tipo Larici-Cembretum, boscaglie dominate da Pinus mugo, e associazioni vegetali pioniere tipiche di substrati basici. Oltre alle preziosità floristiche e faunistiche il sito è da considerarsi unico per la bellezza del paesaggio che risulta dalla presenza di foreste integre, vegetazione alpina, estese formazioni moreniche, roccie esposte e ghiacciai immensi in un area piuttosto piccola.
