Other Site Characteristics

La cresta del Chavalatsch si estende dal Passo di Stelvio verso nord. Le pendici dei monti sono abbastanza inclinate e incise da vallette, nelle quali si trovano estese malghe. Sui pendii vi e spesso pericolo d'erosione, in modo particolare in prossimità del fondovalle.

4.2 Quality and importance

La cresta del Chavalatsch comprende diversi habitat montani e alpini. Sulle pendici della Val Venosta si estendono foreste montane di abete bianco particolari se si considera l areale di questa specie e la sua presenza isolata nella continentale Val Venosta. Vi sono inoltre foreste del tipo Astragalo-Pinetum notevoli nella loro naturalezza ed estenzione. In aree esposte e disboscate si trovano prati dell alleanza Festucion valesiacae che superiormente confinano con foreste del tipo Larici-Cembretum abbastanza integre, fasce di arbusti contorti e praterie alpine (Curvuletum ed altre). Vene calcaree contribuiscono all' aricchimento della flora alpina. Dal punto di vista floristico la zona del Chavalatsch rappresenta il limite distributivo orientale od occidentale per numerose specie. Alcune specie delle Alpi orientali (per esempio Primula hirsuta) li sono ancora abbondanti mentre nella vicina Engadina sono già rarissime o assenti. Molto interessante dal punto di vista biogeografico è la presenza di Aeropedellus variegatus,una specie di Ortottero,che rappresenta un relitto del periodo glaciale e ha un piccolo areale distributivo sulle Alpi, disgiunto da quello principale. La popolazione della cresta del Chavalatsch è l' unica nota per tutto l'Alto Adige. L'interesse biogeografico della zona e la sua integrità la rendono abbastanza importante.
