Other Site Characteristics

Si tratta della porzione ravennate, quindi faentina per collocazione collinare, dei calanchi più tipici della formazione delle Argille azzurre plioceniche, caratterizzati da brulle forme erosive estremamente plastiche dopo le piogge e all'opposto irrigidite e riarse nei periodi secchi. Queste problematiche condizioni limitano le forme vegetative a praterie discontinue caratterizzate da specie annuali su forti pendenze e orli (parte alta del calanco) e da specie perenni nelle parti basse a minor pendenza. La collocazione immediatamente a valle del boscoso versante settentrionale dei Gessi determina interessanti e caratteristiche forme di contrasto.

4.2 Quality and importance

Adattamenti di tipo alofitico, presenze endemiche, forte caratterizzazione del paesaggio e lenta evoluzione delle cenosi, mantenute allo stadio pionieristico in situazione di rifugio per flora e fauna sostanzialmente specializzate, si combinano con interessanti variazioni dovute alla diffusione di specchi d'acqua (il substrato è assolutamente impermeabile), cappellacci sabbiosi d'origine quaternaria in grado di ospitare isole forestali di querceto xerofilo e caratteristici, tenaci arbusteti di ginestra odorosa là dove si attenua la precarietà delle condizioni edafiche. I calanchi sono di fondamentale importanza per la nidificazione di Circus pygargus ( e per altre specie legate a questi ambienti: Caprimulgus europaeus, Lullula arborea, Anthus campestris, Lanius senator)
