Ampio bacino salmastro retrodunale caratterizzato da una fascia di fragmiteto pressoché ininterrotto lungo tutto il perimetro.

4.2 Quality and importance

Zona umida costiera tra le più importanti a livello regionale per la conservazione dell'avifauna acquatica nidificante, svernante e migratoria, inclusa tra i siti ICBP. Rappresenta il sito Toscano più importante per lo svernamento delle anatre tuffatrici e il secondo per Fulica atra, di interesse nazionale per Aythya ferina e Aythya fuligula; regolarmente svernante anche Aythya nyroca. Da segnalare la presenza dell'anfibio Triturus carnifex specie endemica italiana e del lepidottero Callimorpha quadripunctata (nec quadripunctata!).
