Other Site Characteristics

Il biotopo è costituito dall'alveo del torrente Vaccarizzo, che nel tratto interessato risulta incassato tra affioramenti rocciosi della serie Gessoso-Solfifera del Messiniano. La temperatura media del sito su base annua è di 16,3 gradi centigradi. Piovosità media annua 582 mm distribuiti in 59 giorni di pioggia. Clima termomediterraneo secco.

4.2 Quality and importance

Il biotopo, in buone condizioni anche se in qualche tratto degradato per l'apporto di rifiuti solidi, riveste un'importanza scientifica in quanto ospita un endemismo quale Limonium optimae Raimondo, descritto per la prima vola nel 1993. La rilevanza di questo taxon risiede nella sua distribuzione puntiforme e nel fatto che la maggior parte delle entità appartenenti al genere Limonium sono legate ad ambienti costieri dove partecipano a comunità alo-rupicole, mentre poche specie sono note per l'interno della Sicilia.
