Other Site Characteristics

Bioclima termomediterraneo inferiore secco inferiore, con temperatura media annua di 19° C, piovosità media annua di 409 mm (stazione di Gela). Sotto l'aspetto geologico l'area è interessata dalla Formazione Evaporitica Inferiore del Messiniano oltre che da depositi recenti del Pleistocene e Pliocene Superiore, su cu insistono litosuoli e vertisuoli.

4.2 Quality and importance

Le formazioni originarie di macchia risultano quasi del tutto assenti a causa della secolare attività antropica e dell'azione del fuoco. Le aree pianeggianti sono attualmente occupate da colture erbacee e legnose, con comunità infestanti dominate da Silene fuscata, Sinapis arvensis, Chrozophora tinctoria, Euphorbia chamaesyce, Diplotaxis erucoides, ecc. Le aree più scoscese o rocciose sono caratterizzate per lo più da praterie aride ad Ampleodesmos mauritanicus ed aspetti transitori collegati all'abbandono di vecchie colture. Più rari nell'area gli aspetti di gariga a Thymus capitatus su litosuoli e roccia affiorante.Il sito ospita rare specie di rapaci.
