Other Site Characteristics

L'area evidenzia tre strati litologici: alla base le tipiche arenarie di Pirri dello spessore max. di 80 m. quindi la Pietra cantone, costituita da calcare marnoso arenaceo dello spessore di 50-60 m. e infine la Pietra forte piu' dura, costituita da calcare a Lithothamnium, che rappresenta il termine piu' recente di questa successione marina terziaria. I percorsi substeppici occupano le pozze di corrasione ricche di terre rosse e ciottolame.

4.2 Quality and importance

Questo sito presenta due aspetti del medesimo habitat (percorsi substeppici di graminacee e piante annue), con altrettante associazioni di bioclima termomediterraneo superiore secco. Le due associazioni a Lygeum sparti e Brachypodium ramosum sono inoltre bioindicatrici di substrato geologico. La prima si insedia sulle arenarie di Pirri, la seconda occupa i detriti calcarei sia della Pietra forte che della Pietra cantone. Il sito ha quindi un alto valore sia didattico che scientifico.
