Other Site Characteristics

Site includes two large raised bogs ((Ollas (Saklauru) Mire and Kodu - Kapzemes Mire) and some small ones . The largest raised bogs are characterized by hummock-hollow complex and large dystrophic lakes. Fragmentary transitional mires and black alder swamps occur. Pine dominated bog woodland is found in the periphery. Occasionally old aspen and pine forests can be found. D - Red Data Book of Latvia

4.2 Quality and importance

Main qualifying features are Active raised bogs (7110*), Transitional mires and quaking bogs (7140) and Dystrophic lakes (3160). Qualifying species are Leucorrhinia pectoralis, Agrimonia pilosa, Lampetra planeri, Cottus gobio. One of few bogs in Latvia hosting both species of northern distribution Betula nana and species of western distribution Trichophorum cespitosum. The site could be suitable for Pteromys volans (it is found in Estonian part of the site).
