Other Site Characteristics

Site includes large forest area along Tervete River. Mainly dry coniferous forests dominate there. Also dry grasslands and ponds are found. D - Red Data Book of Latvia

4.2 Quality and importance

Main qualifying features are Western taiga (9010*) and Lowland hay meadows (6510) and Semi-natural dry grasslands and.. (6210). Qualifying species are Neotianthe cucullata, Pulsatilla patens, Cottus gobio,Cobitis taenia, Rhodeus taenia,Lutra lutra and Unio crassus. During the last five years Cypripedium calceolus was not found. Hosts large number of other nationally rare plant species. Forests are rich in hollow trees important as roosting sites for bats. The Gulbju Pond is an important feeding place for many bat species. This pond is important staging place for migrating waterbirds. Banks of river Tervete are suitable for breeding Kingfishers. Mature and old Scots Pine forest stands are abundant, however forest is rather managed and lacks dead trees and nest-holes for birds. One of the less human influenced rivers in the Zemgale Lowland.
