Other Site Characteristics

Site includes Riezupe River surrounded by dry coniferous and mixed forests. Small area is covered with wet alluvial forests. In the river valley ravine forests and springs are found. Occasionally dry calcareous grasslands occur. Spectacular sandstone outcrops characterize the area. D - Red Data Book of Latvia

4.2 Quality and importance

Qualifying features are Tilio-Acrion forests on slopes, screes and ravines (9180*), Alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior (91E0*), Fennoscandian mineral-rich springs and spring fens (7160), Water courses with Ranunculion fluitantis and Callitricho-Batrachion vegetation (3260) and Siliceous rocky slopes with chasmophytic vegetation (8220). Hosts a large number of nationally rare and protected plant and animal species. Qualifying species are Lampetra fluviatilis, Lutra lutra, Unio crassus, Cottus gobio and Lampetra planeri in Riezupe River. Despite of territory's small size, it holds a high diversity of Annex I species, incl. 4 species of woodpeckers and the Pygmy Owl. Significant river lamprey and sea trout spawning river.
