Other Site Characteristics

Site includes large floodplain meadows of River Dviete and River Ilukste at their inflow into Daugava River, two eutrophic lakes (Dviete and Skuku), and agricultural lands.

4.2 Quality and importance

Qualifying features are Northern Boreal alluvial meadows (6450) and Natural eutrophic lakes (3150), Lowland hay meadows (6510) and Hydrophilous tall herb fringe communities of.. (6430). One of the major bird sites in Latvia. Highly important stopover site for migratory waterbirds, mostly in spring when vast areas get flooded. Several thousand geese and ducks occur on a regular basis. E.g. daily counts of 3000-5000 bean and white-fronted geese have been documented. Important breeding site for Corncrake.
