Other Site Characteristics

Different type of agricultures lands and grasslands at the lower reach of Svete River.

4.2 Quality and importance

The floodplain is a regular and one of the major stopover sites for migrating waterbirds in Latvia during spring passage. Thousands of waterfowl and waders use the site at a time. Daily counts may yield maximums of up to 1000 Whooper Swans, 5000 6000 White-fronted and Bean Geese, and up to 1500 Pintails. Grasslands include parts of relatively intact flood-plain meadows and are important for breeding Corncrake, Great Snipe, Bittern, Montagu's Harrier, Spotted Crake, and probably Short-eared owl and Bluethroat. Site used for feeding by Black Stork, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Osprey and Black Tern breeding outside it's boundaries. Qualifying features are 6450 Northern Boreal alluvial meadows and 6510 Lowland hay meadows.
