Other Site Characteristics

Site includes coniferous, mixed and deciduous forests, also grasslands in the teritory of former sowjet military area.

4.2 Quality and importance

"Zvarde forest" (former name of the site) was added to the list of Internationally Important Bird Areas of Latvia in 1999. Soon after the site was chosen for one of the first Latvian LIFE projects "Protection and management of two Important Bird Areas of Latvia". Inventory for the project was carried out not only within territory of IBA, but also including new territories all around it. This was necessary due to fact that the IBA was largely covered by forest, and feeding habitats for the Lesser Spotted Eagle inside IBA were almost missing. Expanding boundaries north and south the current nature park "Zvarde" has up to 10 breeding pairs of the eagle, and good feeding habitats for it along the southern edge of main forest tract. The site is not equally suitable for all it's inhabitants. Forests of central part are good for woodpeckers, but almost has no eagles (due to missing feeding habitats there). Beaver activity is pronounced all along small rivers crossing the territory from north to south. At places there are indeed large beaver dams and vast flooded areas with dying forest. All this supports birds, e.g. the Crane, Black Stork and woodpeckers, and augments biological diversity in general. Older forest stands, so called "forest key habitats" are represented all over the territory with larger concentrations in western and central part. Main qualifying features are 9080* Fennoscandian deciduous swamp woods, 9010* Western taiga and 6210 Semi-natural dry grasslands and scrubland facies on calcareous substrates. Qualifying species are Agrimonia pilosa, Triturus cristatus, Vertigo geyeri and Lutra lutra.
