Other Site Characteristics

Site includes a lake surrounded by large quaking mire and raised bog. Bog woodland is found on site periphery.

4.2 Quality and importance

Main qualifying features are 7140 Transitional mires and quaking bogs, 3160 Natural dystrophic lakes, 7110* Active raised bogs and 91D0* Bog woodland. Diverse plant communities supporting rare species are found in transitional mires and fens on islands and in the lake. Hosts a large number of nationally rare and protected plant species. One of few localities of Juncus stygius in Latvia. Qualifying species are Liparis loeselii and Hamatocaulis vernicosus. Wetland part of the area important for birds, with a relatively rich composition of Annex I species for a small site. Hundreds of Bean Geese stage during migration.
