Other Site Characteristics

Site includes part of Venta River and its tributary Skervela River. Dry coniferous forests, broad-leaved forests on slopes, dry calcareous grasslands and other agricultural lands are found there. Spectacular dolomite outcrops occur on riverbanks. Occasionally, alluvial Alnus incana forests, springs and caves are found. D - Red Data Book of Latvia or indicator species of Woodland Key Habitats.

4.2 Quality and importance

Main qualifying features are Water courses of plain to montane levels with the Ranunculion fluitantis and Callitricho-Batrachion vegetation (3260), Calcareous rocky slopes with chasmophytic vegetation (8210), Hydrophilious tal herb fringe communities.. (6430), Tilio-Acerion forests on slopes, screes and ravines (9180*) and species, such as Unio crassus, Myotis dasycneme, Lutra lutra, Lampetra planeri, Cobitis taenia, Cottus gobio, Aspius aspius. Significant for grauling and sea trout. Hosts many nationally rare plant and animal species. Forests important for woodpeckers, few pairs of Kingfishers breed along Venta and it's tributaries.
