Other Site Characteristics

Site includes large raised bog of eastern type with Betula nana (Klesniku Mire) surrounded by bog woodland belt. There is a dystrophic lake (Pitela Lake) in the bog center. Part of the mire is in the Russia. D - Red Data Book of Latvia

4.2 Quality and importance

Qualifying features are Active raised bogs (7110*), Bog woodland (91D0*) and Natural dystrophic lakes (3160). Good population of Betula nana. Natural raised bog with little human impact, large areas of open wet bog where breeding waders concentrate. Notable diversity of breeding bird species with populations in relatively high numbers.
