Other Site Characteristics

Site includes ancient banks of the Baltic Ice Lake with well-expressed ravine relief covered with mixed broad-leaved forests. Occasionally moderately moist meadows are found. Another important site feature is the Kalkupe River and its adjacent habitats, including sandstone outcrops, ravine forests with Fraxinus excelsior, Tilia cordata, occasionally with Ulmus glabra and Quercus robur and wet meadows (Calthion). D - indicator species of the Woodland Key Habitats

4.2 Quality and importance

Main qualifying features are Tilio-Acerion forests of slopes, screes and ravines (9180*) and Siliceous rocky slopes with chasmophytic vegetation (8220), also Molinia caerulea meadows (6410) and Lowland hay meadows (6510). Highly valuable deciduous and mixed forests on steep terrain, with abundance of dead and fallen trees and rich understorey. Among the highest breeding densities of Ficedula parva in Latvia. Qualifying species: Euphydryas aurinia, Lampetra planeri, Cottus gobio, Lutra lutra. Hosts a large number of nationally rare and protected plant and animal species.
