Other Site Characteristics

Site includes Rakupe River and the adjacent habitats - dry and moderately moist meadows, a raised bog, springs, agricultural lands, scattered farmsteads and coniferous (mainly pine dominated) forests, mixed forests and deciduous forests, occasionally broad-leaved trees are found. D - Red Data Book of Latvia

4.2 Quality and importance

Site of high importance for conservation of 9010* Western taiga, 7160 Fennoscandian minerla-rich springs and spring fens and all type of meadows mentioned above (habitat types 6210, 6270, 6410, 6450 and 6430). Qualifying species are Osmoderma eremita, Lampetra fluviatilis, L. planeri, Cottus gobio, and Lutra lutra. Large number of nationally rare plant and invertebrate species is found in the site. The valley is nearly abandoned by human activities and although it's role for open grassland bird species like Corncrake decreases, it is highly important for birds typical to forests with low disturbance: woodpeckers, grouse, Red-breasted Flycatcher etc.
