Other Site Characteristics

The site includes large raised bog comprising species of western distribution in Latvia - Trichophorum caespitosum, and species of eastern distribution - Chamaedaphne calyculata. Large areas of Rhynchosphora alba lawns and hollows characterize the site. There is a large dystrophic lake - Melnezers Lake in the middle of the bog. Coniferous and mixed forests, aspen forests and small oak forest fragments are found on bog islands and in the site periphery.

4.2 Quality and importance

Typical and rich raised bog bird community. One of few breeding sites of Circaetus gallicus in Latvia. One of the best examples of raised bogs in Latvia. Main qualifying features are 7110* Active raised bogs, 7140 Transitional mires and quaking bogs, 91D0* Bog woodland and 3160 Dystrophic lakes. One of the most undisturbed mires in Latvia.
