Other Site Characteristics

The site is located in W Latvia, between rivers Stende and Rakupe. Six raised bogs (Vasenieku, Stiklu Dizpurvs, Vanagu, Pumpuru, Semes and Zvagulu) of western type with Trichophorum cespitosum dominate there. Six lakes, most of them eutrophic, are located in the area. Transitional mires occupy marginal parts of bogs. Coniferous and mixed forests surround mires and lakes. D - rare species in Latvia.

4.2 Quality and importance

Main qualifying features are Active raised bogs (7110*), Bog woodland (91D0*) and Transitional mires and quaking bogs (7140). Qualifying species are Cottus gobio and Lutra lutra. The most important mire complex in western Latvia comprising large raised bogs. However, they are of different conservation status. Significant transitional mire area. One of three Sphagnum lindbergii localities in Latvia. Hosts a large number of nationally rare plant species. Two of three Eleocharis multicaulis localities in Latvia. Area important for breeding and presumably staging birds, with high diversity of species and relatively large populations of Annex I tetraonids, woodpeckers and owls.
