Other Site Characteristics

Site includes large shallow coastal lake, Tosmare Lake surrounded by rich fens and moderately moist meadows. Large stands of Phragmites australis and Scirpus spp. characterize the lake. Fragments of wet Alnus glutinosa forests, broad-leaved forests with old oaks are found there. There is dry Calluna heath as well. D - Red Data Book of Latvia.

4.2 Quality and importance

Main qualifying features are Natural eutrophic lakes with ..(3150), Alkaline fens (7230), Molinia meadows on calcareous, peaty or clayey-silt-laden soils (6410) and Calcareous fens with Cladium mariscus and species of the Caricion davallianae (7210*). High diversity of mire communities, one of few localities of Ophrys insectifera, Laserpitium prutenicum; the only locality of Aira praecox in Latvia. High plant diversity. Hosts a large number of nationally rare plant and animal species. Important feeding habitat for bats. Mainly bird communities characteristic for reed beds are found there. The presence of L.ridibundus colony attracts breeding waterfowl: Aythya fuligula, A.ferina.
