Other Site Characteristics

Site includes dry and moist meadows and calcareous fens in the central part surrounded by secondary deciduous forest, willow stands and Juniperus communis formations. River Vanka flows in the northern part of the site. D - Red Data Book of Latvia

4.2 Quality and importance

Qualifying features are 6230* Species-rich Nardus grasslands.. and 6410 Molinia meadows on..., 7230 Alkaline fens and 5130 Juniperus communis formations.Qualifying species are Vertigo angustior, V. geyeri, Lycaena dispar and Euphydryas aurinia. One of the best sites in Latvia for Vertigo angustior and Vertigo geyeri. However, all the habitats are not in a favorable conservation status due to lack of management. Only a part of grassland area is used for grazing.
