Other Site Characteristics

Intercoastal ridges and depressions parallel to the coastline form landscape here. Dry pine forests dominate on relief elevations, but in depressions wet mixed forests, mires and lakes are found. In the northern part of the site River Irbe flows.

4.2 Quality and importance

Main qualifying features are Wooded dunes (2180), Active raised bogs (7110*), Transitional mires and quaking bogs (7140), Western taiga (9010*) and Bog woodland (91D0*). Important migratory fish spawning and nursery areas. Qualifying species are Leucorrhinia pectoralis, Unio crassus, Lycaena dispar, Graphoderus bilineatus, Lampetra planeri, Cobitis taenia, Cottus gobio, Rhodeus sericeus amarus, Botrychium simplex, Dianthus arenarius arenarius, Saxifraga hirculus, Liparis loeselii. Hosts remarkable number of nationally rare species. The only site, where Botrychium simplex is found. Very diverse and rich bird fauna. Despite former forestry pressure, highly important if not outstanding for hole-nesting forest birds (Dryocopus martius, Glaucidium passerinum, Aegolius funereus, Mergus merganser, Bucephala clangula, Columba oenas etc.), tetraonids (Tetrao urogallus and T. tetrix), wetland species (Grus grus, Porzana porzana etc.) and - due to a relatively low disturbance - diurnal raptors (Aquila chrysaetos, Falco columbarius etc.). Site of high geological and geomorphological importance.
