4.2 Quality and importance

Main qualifying features are 7110* Active raised bogs and 3160 Natural dystrophic lakes. A relatively high diversity and abundance of rare bird species for a small area. 12 Annex I bird species recorded in 2002. The most important are Wood Sandpiper Tringa glareola (7-10 p.), Spotted Crake Porzana porzana and Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus (one of the few breeding sites for the latter in the central region of Latvia). Bean and White-fronted Geese Anser fabalis, A. albifrons use the site as a roosting place during the autumn passage.
