Other Site Characteristics

Site comprises large areas of natural and semi-natural flood-plain meadows with oxbows and scattered Oaks along Pededze and Sita rivers. This is one of the few remaining samples of such habitats in Latvia.

4.2 Quality and importance

Main qualifying features are: Northern alluvial meadows (6450), Wooded meadows (6530*), Riparian mixed forests of Quercus robur, (91F0). At least 18 animal species listed in annexes of EC Birds and Habitats directives depend on this area. 3 globally threatened bird species occur here: White-tailed Eagle, Corncrake (ca 70 pairs!) and Great Snipe (the 2nd largest lek in Latvia). Qualifying species are Osmoderma eremita, Ophiogomphus cecilia.
