Other Site Characteristics

The single largest remaining tract of open and relatively natural flood-plain meadows along Ruja river.

4.2 Quality and importance

Qualifying features are alluvial meadows (6450), Lowland hay meadows (6510) and Hydrophillous tall herb vegetation (6430). Qualifying species is Lutra lutra. Site comprises the most valuable part, from conservation point of view, of the important bird area LV037 Ruja fish-ponds. Since values of the fish-pond complex abandoned in 1990s had degraded rapidly, the site was reduced and limited to the adjacent flood-plain meadows. They hold high breeding densities of Crex crex and a significant breeding population of Gallinago media, as well as valuable flood-plain grassland habitats.
