Other Site Characteristics

The site represents typical landscape of Central Vidzeme elevation: undulating relief, small forest patches interspersed with extensive agricultural land and lakes. The site includes 4 larger lakes and less than 10 smaller lakes and ponds. Site includes also 2 villages Vecpiebalga and Inesi. Biologically most interesting are the peninsula and islands of the Inesis Lake which are covered with young broad-leaved and mixed forests. Forest on the peninsula is old, mixed, rich and rather undisturbed. Raised bog, bog woodland and spruce forests are found on peninsula. The site has highly valuable landscape. D - Red Data Book species

4.2 Quality and importance

Main qualifying features are Oligotrophic to mesotrophic standing waters with vegetation of the Littorelletea uniflorae and/or Isoeto-Nanojuncetea (3130), mesic grasslands (6270), natural eutrophic lakes (3150), and Bog woodland (91D0*). The best site for 3130 in Latvia. At the lake Inesis, there is a unique location of the bog - on the lake's peninsula. Qualifying species are Cobitis taenia, Lutra lutra and Myotis dasycneme. Site is important for breeding Black Kite and may also hold some woodpecker species, Hazel grouse and Red-breasted Flycatcher. Generally the site is important for dispersed breeding bird species characteristic for Latvian farmland: Crex crex, Ciconia ciconia, Lanius collurio and others.
