Other Site Characteristics

The site represents typical undulating landscape of North Vidzeme elevation situated in the northeast Latvia. There are numerous scattered forest patches, small lakes and extensively used agricultural lands. Particularly interesting is the Korneti-Pelli Reserve located in the northern part of the site; it includes 11 lakes in deep sub-glacial valleys surrounded by coniferous, mixed and broad-leaved forests and large areas of improved grasslands. There are several historical monuments and 3 small villages. The site borders with Estonia in the north. In general, main nature conservation interest is the habitat and species diversity in the area: forests, grasslands, lakes and the associated species. Apart species of EU importance, there are numerous records of nationally protected species. D - Red data Book species

4.2 Quality and importance

Qualifying features are all habitat types mentioned in the Chapter 3.2. Includes standards of Carici elongatae - Alnetum urticetosum and Carici elongatae - Alnetum typicum in Latvia. It includes one of the deepest and less eutrophic lakes (3150) in Latvia. There is the steepest slope in Latvia (40-degree slope) covered with broad-leaved forest at the Pilskalna Lake. Lakes are important feeding habitats for several Nationally important bat species. The site holds also a remarkable diversity of bird species with large populations of dispersed agricultural land species: Crex crex, Ciconia ciconia and Lanius collurio. Qualifying species are Lutra lutra, Triturus cristatus, Saxifraga hirculus, Lampetra planeri and Cottus gobio.
