Other Site Characteristics

The site represents typical landscape of SW Latvia; it is relatively fragmented in undulating relief with farming areas and forests and interspersed with numerous lakes of different sizes and character. Larger forest tract lies only in the western part of the site. Within the site, there are two important protected areas around 2 larger lakes Sventes and Medumu. Both lakes have several islands with undisturbed plant communities. Islands are covered with old mixed broad-leaved forests with Tilia cordata, Quercus robur, Fraxinus excelsior, Populus tremula and Betula pendula. Fragmentary transitional mires and springs occur on lakeshores. Valley of River Laucesa and surrounding forests is particularly interesting area for many protected species and habitats. The site holds numerous nationally protected species and rarities, as it is nearly the most southern point of the country. D - Red Data Book species

4.2 Quality and importance

Due to fragmented landscape, the site is important for conservation of many freshwater and woodland habitats, but natural eutrophic lakes (3150) in particular. Of woodland habitats main qualifying features are Fennoscandian old natural broad-leaved forests (9020*) found on lake islands and 9010* Western taiga. Qualifying species are Hamatocaulis vernicosus, Hamatocaulis lapponicus, Liparis loeselii, Agrimonia pilosa, Najas flexilis, Myotis dasycneme, Lutra lutra, Triturus cristatus, Cottus gobio, Cobitis taenia, Leucorrhinia pectoralis, Graphoderus bilineatus, Dytiscus latissimus, Lycaena dispar, Oxyporus mannerheimi. The site holds high breeding density of Crex crex and Circus pygargus and it is important for bats, Myotis dasycneme in particular. Both Skujines and Bardinska lakes are very important sites for the very rare moss species Hamatocaulis vernicosus and H. lapponicus. Lake Skujines is one of 2 sites, where Najas flexilis has been found in Latvia. The site is one of best in Latvia for Triturus cristatus, and one of few record sites for Oxyporus mannerheimi and Lycaena dispar in Latvia.
