Other Site Characteristics

Site includes hilly landscape with eutrophic lakes (the largest are Salmejs, Kaucers, Meirauku, and Stupanu), dry coniferous, mixed and mixed broad-leaved-spruce forests, transitional mires, and grasslands. Scattered farmsteads and agricultural lands are also found within the site.

4.2 Quality and importance

Main qualifying features are 3150 Natural eutrophic lakes, 6210 Semi-natural dry grasslands and scrubland facies on calcareous substrates, 6270* Fennoscandian lowland species-rich dry to mesic grasslands, 7140 Transitional mires and quaking bogs, 9010* Western taiga and 9020* Fennoscandian hemiboreal natural old broad-leaved deciduous forests. Qualifying species are Liparis loeselii and Hamatocaulis vernicosus. Hosts remarkable number of nationally protected plant species. The only site for Tortula latifolia in the Baltic states.
