  • S: in case that the data on species are sensitive and therefore have to be blocked for any public access enter: yes
  • NP: in case that a species is no longer present in the site enter: x (optional)
  • Type: p = permanent, r = reproducing, c = concentration, w = wintering (for plant and non-migratory species use permanent)
  • Unit: i = individuals, p = pairs or other units according to the Standard list of population units and codes in accordance with Article 12 and 17 reporting (see reference portal)
  • Abundance categories (Cat.): C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present - to fill if data are deficient (DD) or in addition to population size information
  • Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation); VP = 'Very poor' (use this category only, if not even a rough estimation of the population size can be made, in this case the fields for population size can remain empty, but the field "Abundance categories" has to be filled in)

Other Site Characteristics

Together with the adjoining SPA Hollands Diep (NL9802019), this is one of the former estuaries of the Rhine/Maas river system, closed from the sea in 1970. In the west site is adjacent to three SPAs (NL2002017, NL2000006, NL9802017). Essentially a 27-km long stagnant freshwater lake, bordered by reedbeds, willow Salix scrub and wet meadows. The water-level varies, depending on the river supply. The site is separated at the west end from the Hollands Diep by a bridge and from SPA Krammer-Volkerak (NL100021) by a dam.  xxx

4.2 Quality and importance

The following data refer to the period 1993-1997 (data in paragraph 3.2a-b refer te period 1999-2003). The open water and sandbanks are used as a roost by large numbers of geese Anser from the surrounding arable and grassland polders (no counts are available). The grassland bordering the Haringvliet is important as a feeding site for Branta leucopsis and as a breeding area for waders and marsh species. The area holds breeding colonies of Sterna hirundo. xxx Species meeting the 1% threshold (breeding): Common Tern Sterna hirundo (1,6%), (non-breeding): Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia (7,5%), Greylag Goose Anser anser (3,1%), Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis (13,0%), Eurasian Wigeon Anas [Mareca] penelope (1,5%), Gadwall Anas strepera (5,0%) xxx One of the five most important sites for (breeding): Common Tern Sterna hirundo, Bluethroat Luscinia svecica; (non-breeding): Little Egret Egretta garzetta, Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia, Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis. The site regularly supports more than 20,000 wintering waterbirds: average peak number 67,307 (1991/92-1996/97). xxx Site largely overlaps with IBA 024 (IBA2000).
