  • S: in case that the data on species are sensitive and therefore have to be blocked for any public access enter: yes
  • NP: in case that a species is no longer present in the site enter: x (optional)
  • Type: p = permanent, r = reproducing, c = concentration, w = wintering (for plant and non-migratory species use permanent)
  • Unit: i = individuals, p = pairs or other units according to the Standard list of population units and codes in accordance with Article 12 and 17 reporting (see reference portal)
  • Abundance categories (Cat.): C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present - to fill if data are deficient (DD) or in addition to population size information
  • Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation); VP = 'Very poor' (use this category only, if not even a rough estimation of the population size can be made, in this case the fields for population size can remain empty, but the field "Abundance categories" has to be filled in)

Other Site Characteristics

A 20-km long section of the River Rhine between Tolkamer (near the German border) and Arnhem (close to NL9802036) and a 12-km section of the River Waal between the branch of the Rhine and the city of Nijmegen (close to SPA NL2000011). The site consists of the flood-plain (grasslands used for diary farming and some nature reserves), clay pits, and the inland subsites Oude Rijnstrangen (1,090 ha) and Ooijpolder (1,575 ha). Elsewhere the site is bounded by the winter dykes.

4.2 Quality and importance

The following data refer to the period 1993-1997 (data in paragraph 3.2a-b refer te period 1999-2003). Species meeting the 1% threshold (non-breeding): White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons (6%), Greylag Goose Anser anser (1%), Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata (1%). One of the five most important sites for (breeding): Great Bittern Botaurus stellaris, Corn Crake Crex crex, Black Tern Chlidonias niger, Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis. xxx The site regularly supports more than 20,000 wintering waterbirds: average peak number 93,902 (1991/92-1995/96). xxx There are large roosts of Anser albifrons, the birds arriving from German and Dutch feeding areas (max. 100,000), but available counts underestimate the actual numbers. xxx Site largely overlaps with IBA048 (IBA2000).
