A Barrinha de Esmoriz integra uma lagoa costeira de média dimensão, circundada de vegetação ripícola e bancos de lodo, comunicando com o mar por um estreito canal. É rodeada por áreas de pinhal, dunas litorais, terrenos agrícolas e construções. A laguna comunica com o mar de forma intermitente em resultado da abertura periódica da sua barra a norte da Praia de Esmoriz. A abertura é efectuada por acção antrópica, recorrendo a meios mecânicos. Depois de aberta, ao fim de algum tempo abarra acaba por fechar, principalmente devido ao efeito das correntes oceânicas, predominantemente de norte. Tratando-se de uma lagoa costeira que apresenta uma cintura de vegetação palustre (caniçal) e ripícola bem desenvolvida, assume importância para os passeriformes migradores transarianos, particularmente durante a migração outonal.

4.2 Quality and importance

A importância da Barrinha de Esmoriz reside na presença da lagoa costeira de água salobra (1150*), um habitat prioritário, originada pela deposição de areia junto à foz de uma pequena linha de água, com a formação de um cordão dunar que é aberto sazonalmente para renovação da água. Destaca-se ainda a presença da campanulácea Jasione lusitanica, um endemismo ibérico dos areais do litoral Noroeste. Este é um dos três Sítios onde está representada. A Barrinha de Esmoriz é ainda um dos poucos locais de ocorrência confirmada da lampreia-de-riacho (Lampetra planeri).
