Other Site Characteristics

Área montanhosa de média altitude, é uma das maiores unidades contínuas de serpentinitos em Portugal, o que lhe confere um elevado interesse geológico e botânico. É a área mais representativa dos ultrabásicos lusitano-durienses, coberta por diversas comunidades e espécies endémicas.

4.2 Quality and importance

A sua vegetação é dominada por azinhais (Quercus rotundifolia) (9340) e sobreirais (Quercus suber) (9330), podendo encontrar-se na margem da Barragem do Azibo um dos mais bem conservados sobreirais transmontanos. São igualmente importantes os zimbrais (Juniperus oxycedrus var. lagunae) com quercíneas (9560*) e os bosques secundários de carvalho-cerquinho (Quercus faginea subsp. faginea), formando a mais extensa área desta comunidade no norte do país. Interessa destacar os matos rasteiros silibasófilos (6160), comunidade específica dos afloramentos de rochas ultrabásicas, dominada por Plantago radicata, onde ocorrem diversos endemismos serpentinícolas de distribuição restrita, comoArenaria querioides subsp. fontqueri ou Avenula pratensis subsp. lusitanica, e que frequentemente se dispõe em mosaico com arrelvados xerófilos (6220*). De assinalar ainda a presença dos serpentinófitos Dianthus marizii, um endemismo lusitano, e Santolina semidentata, um endemismo ibérico. Por razões de diversidade genética releva-se a ocorrência da boga-do-norte (Chondrostoma polylepis*). No que respeita à fauna é de salientar a presença de lobo (Canis lupus), integrando este Sítio a área de distribuiçãodo maior núcleo populacional do país, designadamente o que ocorre no distrito de Bragança. *Actualmente designada por Pseudochondrostoma duriense
