Other Site Characteristics

O Sítio possui um relevo acidentado, com vales encaixados e encostas íngremes, mercê dos acidentes orográficos que são asserras de S.ta Justa e Pias, separadas entre si pelo vale do rio Ferreira, afluente do rio Sousa, o qual por sua vez delimita o Sítio a Sul.

4.2 Quality and importance

Caracteriza-se por um substrato predominantemente xistoso e pela presença de um complexo sistema de fojos e minas (8310), e pequenas nascentes e linhas de água, que permitem a manutenção de condições excepcionais para a ocorrência de flora e herpetofauna associadas a ambientes húmidos. As condições microclimáticas nos fojos proporcionam uma importante área de refúgio à flora de características higrófilas, restringindo-se a este Sítio os únicos locais em Portugal continental onde podem ser observados os fetos reliquiais Culcita macrocarpa e Trichomanes speciosum, espécies de distribuição restrita, sob elevado grau de ameaça. O Sítio é ainda o único local de ocorrência de Lycopodium cernuum em toda a Europa Continental. É um dos sítios mais importantes para a população de salamandra-lusitânica (Chioglossa lusitanica), incluindo vários locais de reprodução confirmada para esta espécie endémica da Península Ibérica.
