Other Site Characteristics

O rio Vouga é o principal curso de água que alimenta a Ria de Aveiro e a Pateira de Frossos. A parte inicial do troço do rio que corresponde ao Sítio corre num vale encaixado em cujas vertentes predominam matos e manchas de exóticas, apresentando uma galeria ripícola geralmente bem conservada. A jusante dá-se a abertura para a planície aluvial, com uma redução do grau de conservação da vegetação marginal, principalmente por efeito da pressão exercida nos campos agrícolas contíguos.

4.2 Quality and importance

Merece destaque a ocorrência de núcleos de floresta sub-higrófila de Fraxinus angustifolia, Quercus robur e Ulmus minor (91F0), própria de depressões ligeiras, planas e extensas, em aluviões raramente inundados. Trata-se de um rio importante para a conservação de espécies piscícolas migradoras, como o sável (Alosa alosa) e a savelha (Alosa fallax, como também para o ruivaco (Rutilus macrolepidotus*) em termos de diversidade genética. É um dos poucos locais de ocorrência confirmada da lampreia-de-riacho (Lampetra planeri). Importante também para a lontra (Lutra lutra). * Actualmente designada por Achondrostoma oligolepis
