Other Site Characteristics

O Sítio é composto por elevações graníticas, entrecortadas por linhas de água, algumas encaixadas, onde se salientam o rio Mondego e o seu afluente rio Seia, bem como o rio Cobral, afluente do Seia. Apresenta um mosaico agro-silvo-pastoril cuja distribuição espacial depende das características topográficas e, consequentemente, da qualidade dos solos. Nas zonas mais aplanadas, correspondentes aos solos de melhor qualidade, ocorrem extensas áreas de terrenos agrícolas, usualmente distribuídas em redor dos principais núcleos populacionais. Em vertentes mais inclinadas ocorrem extensas manchas de pinhais de produção (Pinus pinaster).

4.2 Quality and importance

Nas vertentes de máximo declive dos rios Mondego, Seia e Cobral, assim como nas linhas de festo adjacentes, encontramos os solos mais degradados ou incipientes, que suportam uma vegetação arbustiva dominada por giesta-branca (Cytisus multiflorus), e afloramentos graníticos em abundância. Este tipo de solos e os afloramentos graníticos constituem o habitat preferencial de Narcissus scaberulus, um endemismo lusitano, cuja ocorrência é exclusiva deste Sítio.
