Other Site Characteristics

Ao longo da Ribeira de Quarteira, nas suas margens, é possível observar tamargais e loendrais, orlados de canaviais e freixiais. Merece justa referência a ocorrência da única população mundial de Narcissus willkommii e a presença de 60% dos efectivosda composta Centaurea occasus, um endemismo do Barrocal Algarvio.

4.2 Quality and importance

O Sítio integra um pequeno troço ao longo da ribeira, em excelente estado de conservação, em cujas margens se podem observar tamargais (Tamarix spp.) e loendrais (Nerium oleander) (92D0), orlados de freixiais (Fraxinus angustifolia) (91B0) e de comunidades de ervas altas higrófilas (6430). Nos pegos merecem referência as formações bênticas de Chara (3140). Nas encostas adjacentes dominam os matagais densos dominados por carrasco (Quercus coccifera subsp. coccifera) (5330), onde é observável a palmeira-anã (Chamaerops humilis), e os matos baixos calcícolas (5330) um outro sub-tipo, integrando tomilhais-tojais que se constituem como um refúgio importante de diversidade florística, caso da espécie prioritária Thymus lotocephalus. Refira-se ainda a ocorrência de arrelvados xerofíticos (6220*). Ao nível da fauna é de relevar a presença do cágado-mediterrânico (Mauremys leprosa), espécie que utiliza uma grande variedade de habitats dulciaquícolas, de águas paradas ou de corrente lenta, permanentes ou temporárias, com muita vegetação aquática e elevada insolação das margens.
