Other Site Characteristics

O Sítio Arade /Odelouca desenvolve-se ao longo dos troços finais do rio Arade e da ribeira de Odelouca (o seu principal afluente), cursos de água de regime torrencial. De montante para jusante, até à zona superior do estuário do Arade, processa-se um interessante gradiente biofísico: na parte superior do Sítio observam-se vales encaixados preenchidos por galerias ripícolas serranas, que para Sul dão lugar avales mais largos, nos quais, com a aproximação do litoral, se torna notória a influência salina, crescendo a importânciadas marés e acentuando-se o carácter estuarino, com margens aplanadas preenchidas por lodaçais, sapais, áreas de salgadose pequenas praias de areia, onde se intercalam zonas agrícolas. De referir a existência do bloco de Silves do Aproveitamento Hidroagrícola de Silves, Lagoa e Portimão.

4.2 Quality and importance

Sítio muito importante para a diversidade genética de ciprinídeos, sendo de salientar a boga-do-Sudoeste (Chondrostoma almacai*), entidade anteriormente considerada como C. lusitanicum, a qual ocorre apenas nas bacias dos rios Mira e Arade, limitando a sua distribuição a alguns Sítios do Algarve. Salienta-se ainda a ocorrência do cágado-mediterrânico (Mauremys leprosa), o qual utiliza uma grande variedade de ambientes aquáticos dulçaquícolas ou de baixa salinidade, preferindo águas paradas ou de corrente lenta, tanto de carácter permanente como temporário. Inclui um abrigo que alberga uma colónia de maternidade de morcego-de-ferradura-mourisco (Rhinolophus mehelyi), sendotambém utilizado durante o resto do ano por outras espécies de morcegos, todas elas com estatuto de ameaça. * Actualmente designada por Iberochondrostoma almacai
