Other Site Characteristics

Este Sítio abrange uma ampla faixa costeira, que se caracteriza pela alternância entre sistemas dunares e falésias. Ambosos tipos de substrato apresentam comunidades vegetais bem estruturadas, em bom estado de conservação e com elencos florísticos relevantes, contendo diversos elementos que atingem no Sítio o limite setentrional das suas áreas de ocorrência.

4.2 Quality and importance

O litoral rochoso possui um elevado interesse botânico expresso sobretudo na vegetação halocasmófila perene, com plumbagináceas endémicas (1240) sobre as falésias de litologia variável (calcários, margas, arenitos, etc.) submetidas à salsugem. Aqui se distribuem numerosos endemismos lusitanos, entre os quais Limonium dodartii subsp. lusitanicum e Limonium multiflorum. Sobre substratos duros merecem também referência os raros tojais e urzais-tojais aero-halófilos dominados por Ulex jussiaei subsp. congestus (4030) e os prados rupícolas basófilos com plantas suculentas (6110*). Nas zonas dunares podemos observar sistemas completos, com destaque para as dunas semifixas com matos camefíticos (dunas cinzentas) (2130*) dominados pelo endemismo lusitano Armeria welwitschii. Importantes são igualmente os tojais sobre areias, com ericáceas ou cistáceas (2150*), as areias com matagais de zimbro (2250*) ou com matos dominados por arbustos espinhosos (2260), e as dunas com pinhal-bravo (Pinus pinaster subsp. atlantica) e sob coberto não perturbadorecentemente (2270*). Regista-se também a presença dos endemismos Verbascum litigiosum e Herniaria maritima. Realce ainda para os prados salgados atlânticos (1330) existentes a Norte de Peniche, sendo esta uma das duas únicas áreas de ocorrência deste habitat na Região Biogeográfica Mediterrânica, e para os recifes (1170) que se dispõem ao longo da costa.
