A ZPE é composta por planícies onde se encontram as culturas extensivas de sequeiro, as áreas de esteval e os montados de azinho; pelas elevações quartzíticas das serras de São Barão e Alcaria; e pelos vales encaixados do rio Guadiana e seus afluentes, marginados por escarpas e matagais mediterrânicos.
