Other Site Characteristics

Grundsjömyren is a variable forest and mire-complex. In the site there is a variety of swamp forests and different kinds of wetlands. Adjacent old-growth forest on till is also included in the site. The little lake Grundsjön is situated in the central part of the open bog. Peat dominate soils but there is also till. The site is situated in a rather flat and totally forest-dominated landscape.

4.2 Quality and importance

Grundsjön and its surroundings with large mires and forests, some with few traces of modern forestry have high nature conservation values. In the area around 15 redlisted and near threatened species that indicates old forests and interesting wetlands have been found. This includes birds, lichens, fungi, bryophytes and vascular plants. The mires and surrounding forests are a part of the landscape where the forests are managed with normal forestry practices. In spite of this there are relatively few measures that have affected the mire and some of the forests in the proximity of the mire. Some parts of the forests are natural old forests in late succession stages with only slight human impact. Some comments on data on birds in the site. Strix uralensis breed just outside the site, but the site is the main hunting-ground for this pair. Tetrao urogallus have a rather big lek just outside the site with ca 15 cocks. The site offers good habitat for raising chicks, but no inventories have been made. Grus grus does not breed every year and it is difficult to prove breeding of is Dryocopus martius but the species occur regularly in the area and probably breeds most years, maybe more than one pair.
