Other Site Characteristics

Åsvikelandet-Kvädö is a large site situated along the archipelago in the south of Östergötland. It includes both land and sea with archipelago. The sea and the bedrock characterize the outer part of the area where islands and open sea dominate. The inner landarea contains moraine areas where forest grow and quite a lot of open bedrock. In lower parts clay have been sedimented when the land was under water. On Kvädö farming is carried on in some parts. The forest in the site cover a large area, which makes the site to one of the largest reserves concerning protected forest along the Swedish eastcoast. A lot of different species are living in the site because it keeps a high quality and a lot of different habitats are represented.

4.2 Quality and importance

Åsvikelandet-Kvädö has a very high value because of the large amount of undisturbed nature in the area. The protected forest included in nature reserves is covering a big area, it is one of the largest protected forests of western taiga along the eastcoast of Sweden. The marine areas has a very high value for the birdlife. Licknevarpefjärden is a big bay with a very rich and valueable birdlife. In the archipelago in the outer part of the site a rich birdlife is found as well. Kvädö-Åsvikelandet is a very valueable site with a large area with protected forest and also some other values connected with grassland. The area host a rich birdlife both in the forest and in the sea.

6.3 Conservation measures (optional)

The main purposes of the nature reserves and the birdsanctuary are to protect a large area with natural forests that can develop free (without influence of forestry) and to protect a number of rare and valuable species.
