Other Site Characteristics

The site consists primarily of three islets: Eggegrund, Gråsjälsbådan and Skälstenarna with surrounding water. They are situated at the outer parts of the bay Gävlebukten. They are all built up of the calcareouos moraine originating from the Cambrian-Silurian rock at the bottom of the Gulf of Bothnia (the south Bothnian Cambrian-Silurian area). They are all flat and stony built up of lime-stone rich gravel. The islands are caracterized of beautifully formed shorelines rising in steps from sea level demonstrating the fast upheaval of land.. Due to the calcareous ground there is a rich and remarcable flora and a juvenile vegetation on the upheaval shore.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is important to migratory and breeding birds. Therefore an ornithological station has been established on Eggegrund. Due to the calcareous ground the vegetation is rich, diverse and rare. There is a remarcably rich flora of bushes and the open parts are caracterized of a dry meadow flora strongly influenced of the lime stone gravel which is building up the island. The site is of national interest to environmental care.

6.3 Conservation measures (optional)

Eggegrund is dependant on regular care whereas Gråsjälsbådan (with a rather unaffected forest) and Själstenarna are intended to free development. However the vegetation on Eggegrund will be followed up and evaluated every five years. Eggegrund, with some small fishermens cottages, has formerly been grazed. It is important to prevent the island from beeing overgrown.
